People

Dr. Maria Mayorga

I am a Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State University. My research interests include predictive models in health care, health care operations management, and humanitarian logistics. Please Visit my Website!

Amrita Malur

I’m a junior in Industrial Engineering with a minor in French and I’m currently set to graduate in May 2021. I didn’t know much about spontaneous volunteer convergence and humanitarian logistics when starting my research over summer, but now I understand how impactful it can be in rebuilding communities after a disaster. I love the connection this research builds between people and STEM. My work specifically focuses on improving a model of spontaneous volunteer convergence by looking at social networks, information sharing, and decision making between volunteers and volunteer sites.

Outside of research and school, I am a photographer for NC State Student Media and I’m a part of the University Honors Program. I also enjoy playing the piano, traveling, and having a good time with friends!

Connie Fienberg

I am a junior majoring in Industrial Engineering as well as minoring in Cross-Disciplinary Leadership and expect to graduate in May 2021. I have always been interested in the direct connection between people and engineering, and when I learned about humanitarian logistics and Dr. Mayorga’s work on spontaneous volunteers, I knew this was what I wanted to do. My research specifically focuses on how motivation affects an agent’s intent to become a spontaneous volunteer, and how changing internal and/or external factors affect the output of our model.

Outside of academia, I am also a mentor within the Goodnight Scholars Program, a scholar and photographer with the University Scholars Program, and the Public Relations Director and project member of Engineers without Borders. (If I ever have downtime) I’m also a big reader, traveler, binge watcher, and dog lover.

Kyle Paret

I am currently a fifth year PhD student in Industrial and Systems Engineering. My research focuses on using simulation (DES and ABM) to inform policy decisions related to spontaneous volunteer convergence during disaster response. I joined the RAPID team in August 2018 to provide mentorship, coding and modeling expertise, and to collect data for my research.

My personal interests include hiking, board games, and Penn State Football.

Matthew Parker

I am a senior in Industrial and Systems Engineering graduating in December 2019. I joined the RAPID team in August 2018 to use my data analysis skills to help those affected by natural disasters. I have a lot of family on the coast of North Carolina, and understanding how spontaneous volunteers can best be utilized is extremely important to me.
When I’m not working on Research, I am either studying, working at my internship at SAS Institute. In my free time I like to play basketball and guitar, serve at my church, and cheer on NC State to victory of UNC with my family and friends!
